Gas Saving Tip #1

September 10th 2006 15:48
We established yesterday that the whole energy question was worth discussing and that the majority of us are to some degree concerned with it. To that end, we explored some of the more compelling reasons folks are interested. Specifically we identified the high cost of fuel and the environmental impact of global warming as two of the most decorated reasons folks are jazzed over the energy question.

Well it's time to get into the nuts and bolts shall we? Afterall that's what you came here for right? From here on out the blogs may get a bit shorter as I plan to attempt to offer ONE (1) Fuel saving tip per day. Yes there will be some discussion on them, but nevertheless how much can I talk about when I tell you to SLOW DOWN for Godsakes!

Yep, you guessed it. The first and BIGGEST Fuel Saving Tip I'd like to share is one you've heard from your parents ever since you turned 16 and got driver's Freedom. SLOW DOWN!!!! It's not quite that easy though. It's not really the speed that matters, but the Rapid acceleration. The peel out factor I like to call it. Edmunds.com (CNN's Automobile Content Site) sums it up quite well:

"You've probably been told before that rushing up to stop lights and racing away from them wastes gas. Turns out it wastes a whole lot of gas, according to Edmunds.com's test.

Slowing zero-to-sixty times to 20 seconds instead of 10 to 15 seconds makes a big difference in mileage over the long term. Braking slowly and gently helps, too.

Driving the Land Rover gently resulted in a 35.4 percent increase in gas mileage while feather-footing the Mustang garnered a 27.1 percent mileage increase."

Interestingly, Edmunds finds that rapid acceleration or braking are two of the biggest fuel wasters known to man. So eassssssyyyyyyy does it there Tex. Ease off the burning desire to smoke that car sitting next to you at the light and in the process you'll save a little tire and engine wear as well. As you will see in time here, most all of the fuel saving tips when used together with other tips will have a global impact on more than just saving a buck or two in gas. You'll find that the overall health of your vehicle will improve as well. And although gas isn't cheap, neither are new cars

Well I'd best check into all my fantasy football leagues right now since we're only an hour or so from opening day kickoffs! Until we chat again.....As always............Godspeed & Good luck!!

"It's not really the speed that matters"

No kidding. The car I currently drive, a Mitsubishi Magna is most efficient when it's driven at 95 km/h, most cars are somewhere between 80 and 100 for max efficiency, but yeah, fast acceleration is obviously to be avoided

Peace
