Gas Saving Tip #7...Does Oil Color Matter?

September 18th 2006 21:31
A very common misconception many people have is the belief that looking at the Color of an engine's oil is indicative of determining whether or not the oil is effective or needs changed out. Although an equal misconception is the 3,000 mile oil change interval, a lack of oil testing analysis leaves most stuck with somebody's recommended drain interval as what they must go by. The absence of an ability to test your own oil leaves most of us stuck with ancient ideas about oil drain intervals (either from the manufacturers or the Quick Lube types). The good news here is this is changing. It is a fact that changing your oil regularly as recommended will do more than simply save ya a little bit in gas money. It will save you a ton in engine wear problems and prolong the life of your engine.

The question becomes who to believe? I run into all sorts of folks who grew up with the concept of changing your oil every 3,000 miles PERIOD or EXCLAMATION POINT. No amount of science or information to the contrary shall change some of these people's minds. If my father was alive today, we'd argue this point I almost guarantee it! The quick lube industry and Big Oil feeds this concept. In fact, they BANK on it. There are many myths surrounding synthetic lubricants and oil change intervals.

The advent of synthetic lubricants in the early 70's brought a new thinking to drain intervals and what they meant. Since Amsoil first coined the extended drain interval language and stood behind 25,000 mile or one year oil change intervals as a recommendation/guarantee, others have slowly began to adapt some of their own thinking, though they've got a Long Ways to go.

The next couple of days has me very busy at trainings so our next discussion on Thursday will go a little further and ask what should I be putting in my vehicle. We'll talk a little about viscosity and how this contributes to better fuel economy. Until we chat again........Godspeed & Good luck!
