Every once in a while I think it's necessary to post or repost some semblance of a few of the most common tips to save fuel. Sure we've been over them, but for newbies or for those who may have forgotten, it's hard to expect folks to go looking back through the archives, so I repost or bring in a new post from a different source every so often. This way the standard tips that work are readily available. So today will serve as just such a post.
t appears that gas prices are going to be on the high side again this year, so it is important to conserve gas in whatever way possible. There are many steps that you can take in order to make your tank of gas last longer. Just a few of them are as follows:
1. Avoid letting you car warm up for too long; 60 seconds is long enough. Letting your car idle is one sure fire way to waste gas.
2. Do not start and stop your engine unless you absolutely have to. Starting you car back up takes the same amount of gas as letting the engine idle for 60 seconds
3. Do not rev the engine. There is no need to lay on the accelerator when your car is in neutral or park.
4. Avoid jack rabbit starts. When starting from a dead stop be sure to accelerate in a slow and smooth manner.
5. Choose the grade of gas you use very carefully. There is no benefit of using premium gas if your car only requires the use of regular.
6. Keep in mind that driving over 40 miles per hour puts your car up against an extreme amount of wind resistance.
7. Going along with number six, keep your windows up when driving at highway speeds. Driving with your windows down will cause air drag which can reduce gas mileage by up to 10%.
8. Drive at a steady pace. Both slowing down and speeding up use fuel.
9. Remember that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Taking the scenic route may be more fun, but you will also use more gas.
10. Be sure to get your car tuned up regularly. Consult with your owner’s manual in order to find out when your car is due for its next tune up.
11. Remove snow tires during the summer months. Deep tread tires can harm your gas mileage.
12. Air conditioners can decrease fuel economy by up to 20%. Unless it is absolutely necessary, try to avoid running your air conditioner for an extended period of time.
13. Make sure that your tires are set to the appropriate pressure level.
14. And lastly, remember that car pools really do save gas and money! Hook up with some friends or co-workers and save your wallet as well as the environment.
