Fuel Saving Advice - October 2006

Happy Halloween

October 30th 2006 19:29
In the spirit of the holiday, I've prepared a cute little game. If you've seen this before don't give the answers to your friends. You're going to see two pictures that are nearly identical. The story goes only about 7 people out of 100 can pick out the difference(s) between the two pictures. Turn up you speakers a little bit until you can start hearing the light background music. Then find the differences between the two pictures. Good Luck...And Peace be with you all on this most scary of holidays....

Plant A Tree!!!!!!!

October 29th 2006 02:07
Part of the need to conserve and to reinvigorate a planet that we are killing, is to figure out what we (yes you and I) can do to breathe some life back into it all. What we can do is not very limited. There are any number of measures available to us.

One of the best examples is simply planting a tree....We've got upwards of 100 trees on the property and I planted 8 new ones this year. I don't expect that most will rival me in my concern and effort, but if you simply plant ONE tree I, and the environment, will thank-you over and over again.

Sadly, our Cypress (planted in June) lived wonderfully all summer and grew about two feet. Last night, and yes I know this because I check the newer trees daily, got into a fight with a deer from hell. This particular deer debarked much of the tree while also stripping away nearly all its' branches....I'm no hunter, but I'm thinking about taking up the sport....from my living room!

Today I caged the tree. Hopefully it's not too late. This video is not for the faint of heart!

Ahh after seeing THIS perhaps I'll let the little guys have their way afterall!

More Gadget Debunking

October 27th 2006 15:43
I'm still getting a few emails and see everywhere I turn on the net all these gadgets , pills, and the like that are supposed to save fuel. As most of you know, these devices and pills simply do not live up to the hype. Popular Mechanics have tested literally dozens of fly-by-night schemes and scams and have concluded the same.

As we've mentioned, there are ways of saving fuel (we've discussed dozens), but most of these are common sense approaches. Remember folks, if it sounds too good to be true IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!

Although we've touched on the notion of Green Cars in the past, we really haven't explored them as much as we should in my opinion. So, here's a top 10 list that is actually pretty good in my opinion. Many folks turn away from the idea of a green car for no other reason than the amount of green it takes to get one! However, it's the age old problem your upper end products always seem to have. Specifically, folks get too hung up on the upfront price irregardless as to what they may save in the long run. We are an impatient, cheap society in general. I want it now, and I want it cheap. It's that very mentality that is systematically killing our planet.

I run into it everyday with my synthetic oil business. I hear the common argument...Why should I pay $60-$70 for an oil change when I can get it for $24.99 at WalMart? Nevermind that they pay $24.99 about 4-5 times for what the $60-$70 accomplishes once. It's kind of a no brainer, but then again, there are a lot of no brainers in the world I suppose.

As always................PEACE................Blogtommy

Back Into Town...Posts To Resume

October 26th 2006 03:12
Hey folks! Sorry for being quiet for a while, but the job does call me to Salem once a quarter or so and that's a bit of a road trip for a few days. Got back late tonight and will get back to business tomorrow. I've got so much reading to do tonight however on all the other blogs I also got behind on! Although that's the easy or fun part (the reading that is). Peace all and we'll be throwing something out there some time tomorrow!

There's One In Every Crowd

October 22nd 2006 01:09
Although these aren't all confined to saving gas or fuel, they are nonetheless quite funny. I'm sorry, but a good laugh goes a long ways towards your health if not saving a buck or two....What will people think of next?

One person suggested ways to save money on weddings that included picking up the leftover flowers at a cemetery. I'm not sue how you can tell which are "leftovers."

A Sure Fire Way To Save On Gas

October 19th 2006 21:26
I've had a few emails from folks making some kinda out there suggestions as far as saving a few bucks at the pump, but I've got to hand it to this lady. She's absolutely correct in her assertion that this is a 100% guaranteed fuel saver.

Testimonial

October 19th 2006 01:37
I've always been a bit skeptical when it comes to business testimonials since I've seen how so many are generated, but when it comes to this business, I tend to believe em, if for no other reason, I too have many of the same experiences as a customer. I received my Amsoil Action News (Dealers receive monthly) and on page three of this mag is a little ol man (gotsta be 80 ) who recently had a story to tell....how sweet!

Tony Corndueschbag commented tonight on ESPN's Monday Night Football, that "thousands of sports writers are getting ready to write their stories about tonights Cards vs Bears NFL football game, and it seems that it would be hard for them not to use the words "Cards Choke" in the first sentence.

Here's my read Cornhole...

Other Types Of Energy Savings

October 12th 2006 23:51
Since the inception of this blog we've kind of focussed on automotive ways to save fuel. However, the blog is entitled fuelsavingadvice.com, which to me implies much more than simply cars, trucks etc....Saving fuel, is a topic that should in fact address every living individual on this planet...perhaps even the cave dwelling type

Sometimes we tend to forget how much energy we blow on a daily basis just at home. What's the worst room in the house? Yeah that's an easy one. Some may think it's the bathroom, but really that's simply a water drip line. The real culprit energywise is the Kitchen. As the resident cook in this here household, I'm still taking tips from the masters cuz I just get into a focus/daze and forget about things. Maybe it's a male thing. I'm forever scrutinizing how my wife works behind the wheel yet don't do the same thing to myself in the kitchen. I'll have every possible energy sucking device going all at the same time even though I can only use one, perhaps two of them at the same time.

Too Dirty!

October 12th 2006 02:42
At some level I think the majority of right thinking individuals care about our environment and what we're doing to it. Don't get me wrong, many Rightest individuals simply do not. There is way too much money to be made at the cost of Earth's future. A very big pollutant on the landscape is diesel fuel but again, there are some alternatives that can have dramatic impact on our environment.

It's somewhat striking what we're willing to do to the place we call home. We may get terribly offended if some family member or whatever waltzes into our house smoking a cancer stick, yet don't seem to take the same offense to corporations poisoning the ozone layer 100 fold that.

Home Sweet Home and No Heart Attack

October 11th 2006 02:28
As many of you know I work some in the real world (arghhh...yuck yuck yuck), but today got a little shock that must have tested my 39 year old ticker. Normally I don't post during the middle of the week, but I was so damn glad just to live through the day I thought I'd better, just in case tomorrow tested Mr. Ticker again. I arrive at work at 0800 to find a subpoena lying strategically on my chair. Not worried too much (I've seen my share of these things) I look at it and quickly notice that a file and someone to bring it, is to be in Court on 10/10/06 at 0900....ahhhhhhhh ok...WHAT? That's like one hour...Sheiiittttttt

Long story short, I learned the case was called off yesterday but someone decided not to let me know this much....It's always good to see if the heart can still take a jolt. Thankfully I report we're doing just fine this evening.

Beavers Blow

October 9th 2006 17:32
Just got back from the annual pilgrimmage to Corn Valley. What a pathetic football team the Oregon State Beavers are. You can see the aweful truth Here!

But let's get back to work shall we? I did find it just a little perplexing to see gas prices a full 30-40 cents a gallon cheaper in the Willamette Valley than over here on the dry/rural side of the State!
We actually filled the friend's Suburban at 2.45 per gallan vs the 2.75 or so here.

Something Different

October 6th 2006 15:58
I do some gambling at times and have played around with some internet marketing schemes/scams...Won some and lost some. Probably lost more than I won, but have had some good success in limited areas. There are two things to keep in mind. Most internet "opportunities" are scams. Most are pyramids. And most end up losing in the end. However, you can make money even from scams if your positioning and timing are right. That said. You can also lose money with good positioning and timing if the people running the show are outright crooks.

This is the first program I've joined in I don't know how long. It's prelaunch and less than 2,500 people in it. It's Free and I thought I'd go along for the ride just to see how it plays out. Interested?

Gas Saving Tip for The Sports Fan

October 5th 2006 01:15
We have not really discussed aerodynamics or what is called "drag" too much as of yet here, but we have danced around the issue a bit. Well since I'm heading to a College Football Game soon, I got to wondering about all those cute little team flags you see donning the windows of most of the cars you see as you approach the stadium. It doesn't really matter what the sport or level, if you've been around sports (especially football) it seems to be epidemic. Here's a nice little article that should get you to think twice about rooting for your team in that manner anyways.

There are tons more ways to help solve this notion of engine drag. Engine drag varies between vehicles and obviously driving styles, but in general the physical component of your vehicle will be the biggest enemy causing excess engine drag. Chief among the enemies here is a vehicle out of alignment. This just begins the whole process of drag. Not only bad for your engine, have you priced tires lately? They ain't exactly cheap. If you haven't had your alignment checked in a while, do yourself a favor and get it done. Here's a hint. If your tires are fairly new or you think they're ok, go ahead and take your vehicle to the Les Schwab boys. If you're in need of tires, you can still go here, but the chances are better than not that you'll be walking out with a new set of tires as well as an alignment. Don't get me wrong, if both those things are needed, you will save a ton in the long run.

New Article Release

October 4th 2006 03:06
Normally I don't do any posting Tuesday or Wednesday (my blog off days if you will), but a new test and resulting article is now available from Amsoil that is amongst the most comprehensive articles I've read. It deals with 7 different API tests which individually are quite remarkable but when you throw them all together with the supposed great competition Amsoil took on head to head and see the results, it's a bit staggering!

Along these lines, let's talk briefly today about another very important gas saving tip. Winterizing or summerizing (if that's a word) your ride. Winter and summer place very different demands on your vehicle. From an oil stand point, most people worry more about getting their oil changed during the heavier driving months (summer) than they do in the winter. Both hot and cold bring particular risks and hazards to your engine, but perhaps one of the most overlooked and biggest issues for most of our engines is cold crank starting. Cold is almost as deadly, and in some cases much moreso than hot summer driving. Bottom line is what you're using. If you're like most and still running on a crappy brand of petrolium oil (and you can place any company name here...cuz it just doesn't matter), you'd better not push your changes much beyond 4000 to 5000 miles. Petrolium oil simply can't do longer drain intervals. While your winterizing, make sure and check your fluids and replace your air filter (again every year if you're using conventional air filters) to give your ride a smooth transition into the new season. Seems silly that so many spend so much time, energy and MONEY putting inferior products in your vehicle, but since so many do, I owe it to you to keep those changes on time with this gentle reminder

Elections and Gas Prices

October 2nd 2006 14:45
Is it me or just a few weeks prior to another US election process and gas prices again are on the decline?? Is there a correlation? Although there are those who believe there are all sorts of deep, dark conspiracies between largely the GOP and Big Oil, much of this has stayed at a relatively academic level. Don't get me wrong, there have been any number of "investigations" into this link, but not much definitive is coming out of it. A couple of things to note. Mid term elections are a few weeks away but generally our election season is in middle Fall here. Gas prices traditionally are highest at the height of the summer vacation. So in most years prices will start to fall a little here during this period of time anyway. Second, with a relatively unspectacular Hurricane season in the Gulf, supplies have reached nearly an all time high. Simple supply and demand goes a long way in determining what we pay at the pump.

I'm not beyond giving some creedence and merit to a real good conspiracy theory though so if ya all find something worth printing....shoot me the link!
