12 Step Program

August 24th 2007 15:43
I've talked openly about at least one of my vices in life, have admitted it, sought help and live with it daily. It's not pretty, fun or something of which I'm proud. It's life. However, therapy brings out subsurface issues and in a way serves to twist the knife a little deeper reminiscent of the Black Crowes tune Addiction. True to the song, the pain does bring a smile to my face. What is this evil thing? I'm blogtommy, and I'm a blogoholic.

Aside from some fleeting references to blogging and what it may or may not mean for your on or off line business, it struck me recently as I was in the 34th minute of my 50 minute hour that I hadn't really said why blogging was such a good thing. So today, with a little help from my friends, I thought I'd scratch that off the list.

Blogging is a form of self-promotion that is probably second to none available on the web. Most of us who have spent any money on advertising, probably concur that word of mouth advertising still is the most effective form available. Well there's not much more a wordier of mouth method than blogging. To be sure there are lots of styles, formats and reasons folks may start a blog, but in the end there will be some defining characteristics of a blog that set it apart from other types of sites and advertisements. Again, the personal touch is probably the most important aspect here, as many are slow to trust anything coming from a computer screen.

There are other more known reasons for blogging such as promotion of products, educating, informing etc....but one of the lesser known benefits is one that if you've blogged for any length of time at all, you will understand, whereas those who don't, wont. Simplistically, the notion of blog started as really nothing more than a web log or place to store ideas and thoughts in writing. Interestingly, as the blogosphere has went through one warp change after another, what remains still is the "log." For businesses (bloggers get this) what better way to store thoughts, subject matter, or whatever else is on your mind. For me, blogging lets me document a lot of the things I’ve done in the past, so I can go back and reference it later. Not unlike a personal wiki. This is a very often overlooked benefit that most don't even realize until they've done it for a while.

Can anyone set up a blog and start blogging? Some say no, but I don't agree. I definitely believe there are relative degrees of blogging excellence out there, but I don't think one has to be a professional writer to jump into the game. With the large array of options now available out there, there really is little reason not to give it the ol' college try. Speakin' of education. I'm going to give you below one of the best values on the blogging market today. This link will go to my bigdaddy blog (because I think it's my coolest looking blog), but do check out the edublog.org site that hosts this blog. If you've wanted to take WordPress for a spin but have been unable to pull the trigger, this is for you. Hosted free and with around 50 template options including customizable headers and side widget action. Even the computer challenged will fall in love with WordPress here. So give it a spin!
